I am looking at buying a 640. Visually it looks good.
Being a mechanical numptie, I’d appreciate advice on what to look for?
Many thanks

How many miles?

Timolgra and Mikeyboy will know more than me.

Starter (Sprag) clutch will make a horrible noise if it’s going, cam followers do wear but difficult to see without the head off.

Suspension will probably need a service. And it’s beginning to be difficult to get some parts now as I’m discovering.

Other than that usual rules apply - buy the seller!

Make sure that it starts easily, don't be fobbed off with any excuses of it being not used for a while. My experience is of poor and degraded wiring leading to chasing earthing points and worn loom issues.
Take a good look at the wheels, if they're D.I.D. check for any signs of corrosion, they'll be worse on the inside which you can't check easily.
I think that exhaust centre section are obsolete and prone to rust, I had to make a new one for both of ours.
Which model are you looking at, overall they're a good bike.

Good point - they are outstanding bikes.

I loved mine, especially after I fitted an FCR carb.

Big issue with older ktm’s is parts supply ,stuff like exhaust headers are no longer available,
640 can suffer from,worn/rattly clutch baskets
Sprag clutch can fail,
Fuel pump failure,
Rocker arm wear/failure.
Coolant pump spindle can wear and leak.
Instruments can fail on the adv model ,kerrrching if you can find a decent set.
Also the engine can be a right vibey bugger ,tho some are better than others.

Thank you all. Very helpful. I'll need to do a long test ride and look deep into the seller's eyes...
I am looking at a 2004 Adv.
