Hi Guys,
I have a new to me 2006 hexhead. I have been working through the servicing getting to know the bike. It was laid up for a couple of years prior to me getting it and I got it at a good price.
In my ownership it has always had a problem bogging down when given a good handful and it feels like it cant get enough fuel. It suddenly cuts out momentarily and when you are trying to give it some beans its not so nice, it feels like it "misses". With acceleration being sustained it sometimes catches and then applies it's power - intermittently with a jumping on off sort of thing.
Having recently made sure all the values were set correctly (I live in hope) and it did not fix it I am now looking else where.
I am on my second tank of fuel and have put engine cleaner in it but to no effect.
So my guess after having read about the fuel pump controller that it could be that. It could still be a gunged up filter or something but I don't know.
Is there a fool proof way to trouble shoot this or do I need to get it wired up at the BMW garage to check codes? NB. there are no errors lit on the dash.
I was also thinking that it could be the timing advance being set incorrectly except its all electronic.
Under a low acceleration it behaves just as you would expect - reliably and consistently.
Do you have any insights?
Kindest regards,
Nicholas

Check the coil caps/sticks. They’re notorious for failing. Try a search there’s plenty of previous posts on the very simple procedure on how to check them.

Go through the basics

New oil , & filter - use genuine !

Check & set valve clearances & endfloat

Balance throttle body's & reset TPS & idle steppers

Then if it's not pulling , consider blocked internal fuel filter

THis is where a GS911 becomes a good idea

Had similar with my '05, seemed in the end to be the connection to the coils. The coils were fine but I clearly hadn't pushed the connectors together properly after doing some 'maintenance'

Worth checking

During the service (YouTube is great) I took one of the old plugs and ground off the earth from the end. I then checked that there were good sparks from each of the coils - which there was. I clearly can't rule them out though.
They are not cheap to buy and swap....
With the consistency the engine has at lower revs it does that suggest they are ok - but they could breakdown at higher revs.
It feels like its the whole engine though, not just one side....
Also, with two coils on each side it would require both to fail for half the engine to fail. Is their notoriety that bad?

Thank you for that.
Oil check,
Valves check.
endfloat - don't know what that is
Balancing shortly when I can get the pressure gauges.
Will read up on throttle positioning sensor. Did not know about that.
Idle steppers same there, do I need specialist tools for them?

Thank you. Will check tomorrow.
That would be a lovely fix!

General consensus then is that it is not fuel but coils.
That's probably a good thing.

Usually When you are cruising and then you put it under pressure

That is when the coil or coils fail

Sometimes you can see a touch of blackening and a smell of old burned bakelite (But not always !)

Take a look at sparkplugs.co.uk as they sell the same as the oem ones but under the Champion brand. 2years ago I bought all 4 for less than £200 inc postage.

When my coil or coils were failing it started fine. Ran fine until you got to a certain revs under full throttle then it wouldn't pull and coughed and spluttered. I was in France at the time and nurses it for over 1,000 miles till I got home. New main coil sticks and it was perfect again. This was at about 90.000 miles. The secondary coils are still original at 132.000 miles now.
Using part throttle at the time could get her over 70 mph and as much as 80 at times to keep moving.

Just went there to buy them but they are obsolete!

The search begins for other providers.... Any ideas?

I will find the box or email so I can provide the part numbers for you

I have now bought the two straight ignition coils from onlinecarparts.co.uk
and the left and right ones from motorworks.

So now I should end up with a bike that goes like a new one.

Thank you everyone for your comments and help.

Note for anyone who needs them.
OEM Numbers:
Straight (x 2) 12 13 7 715 853
Left 12 13 7 715 855
Right 12 13 7 715 856
