First time for everything - never attempted trip report before now.

Fluids changed, splines checked so what could go wrong travelling on 34 year old K75s to Spain / Portugal.
Perhaps i should have more sense as i am more than twice the K75s age.
No photo of leaving home as it was 6am start heading to Rosslare and Brittany Ferries to Bilbao.

As i had booked ferry in advance i had a dinner included ( this perk is no longer available)

terrine of duck

Halibut on a shellfish bed

pear tart + chocolate on side ( not for long)

Nice smooth crossing , next day approx midday the Bilbao " Pilot " was ready to board

What date did you leave home, Im looking forward to the rest.

All wery well with the pics of the grub. As good as it might look, 66% would have been wasted on me. So show us the bike then instead 😂

I love a trip report. I find it quite indulging writing (typing) one up, having to string together a storyline that draws people in, intertwined with photographs that make it even better.

Did not want to use motorways and wanted to first see a bit of North coast.

Arrived here at dusk. Bike parked out front.

On outskirts of Santander took A67 to change direction south. Tonight's destination Valladolid.
Place-names on direction sign remind me of past walks Camino de Santiago.

Good start!
As a person of similar age, if not maturity, I am planning on going there again next year and welcome more of your thoughts on places visited, as well as the compulsory food pictures!

Clouds gathering but on we go.
It is clear just how much damage was caused by fire

Arrived at Quinta da Leandres just nearby Manteigas

OK the rain arrived in earnest. In fact the next day I thought it prudent to stay put. I went into Manteigas for grub around 5pm when there was a lull.

Day lost but better be safe ( its an age thing). Large amounts of clay, gravel and water on smaller roads20230916_180717.jpgtoday.
Can you zoom in on the security arrangements here .

breakfast included homemade jams

Not surprising when you see the amount of fruit trees and vines on the farm

Still raining intermittently this morning as I started out
20230917_103056.jpg20230917_100747.jpg

Saw these as I passed through Sao Paio

20230917_114056.jpg20230917_114127.jpg

Never saw these before. The clue is in the street name

I was using a Beeline as guidance. You probably know it works off Google maps which can bring you to unexpected roads. Sometimes thats just fine.

Mirandela is destination tonight. I really like this town but find it difficult to explain why. Its a feeling again. The surrounding area I also find interesting. Macedo de Cavaliers, Chacim etc.

This is the back of Hotel Dom20230918_083820.jpg Dinis. I booked in for 2 nights (118 euro). Very nice staff , Hotel needs money spent on it.

Tras os Montes I believe means " beyond the mountains". So mysterious. I can imagine in times gone by it signified uncertainty and perhaps fear. Even today there is a festival in Podence where masks and disguise is worn so youths can do some deilment and not be recognised. Not sure it would work in all our communities.

Back to Mirandela

No place booked tonight . Stopped in Sahagun for coffee. Decided to try Hostal Moratinos 8km away near Cea. All names pilgrims would be familiar with. Unfortunately when I got there it did not seem to be open. Upstairs shutters all open. A very nice old man (older than me) asked me to wait while he went back to his house to make a call. He came back breathless and explained the owner was in Leon. I did not know if they would be back or not so thanked the man and left. I wish I could speak Spanish.
It was no longer early and as I rode along I decided I would stay at the first place with a vacancy.

Cea

Did not see any place until I arrived at Cistierna.

A couple of guesthouses had just closed for the season . A kind bar owner gave me directions to here.

The least expensive of the trip

Nice trip Tom, and a great choice of bike. :thumb2

Super Bock reminds me of Portugal, have you nipped over the border?

On the way to Canvas de Onis I took a small detour to Cuenabres. Paved Road ends here.

lovely small valley
Note seat . There are 4 of these along the valley road. Looking closer - there is a pedal exercise unit at each seat. 20230920_121932.jpg20230920_121749.jpg

Kind words from a pro, thanks

A few have commented on bike.

Bike faultless. I purchased it (unseen) following a lead from de crowe of this parish (thanks de crowe). Only have it 2 and 1/2 years so cannot claim any credit for condition.

Standard except Hagon shock, raised bars and reupholstered seat.20221107_145641.jpg
I was getting slightly concerned about its weight due to past health issues and had put a deposit on f650 Dakar before my trip.
Having got to appreciate it on the trip I am reluctant to change. Anyway one has to go as "my pet R80g/s PD stays.

Can’t you just squeeze it in as a 3rd bike ? It looks like a keeper to me
