Engine disassembly project

As Nin said, the cost of a SH engine will be peanuts compared to new parts, Shims , gaskets, fixings, and any specialist tools that may be required, not to mention the time involved.

But the real kicker will be when you put the rebuilt unit back into the current frame , it will still be an old bike with 85k on the clocks.

I'd strip it, learn what you know , and buy a SH engine and replace
 
Just a quick knock up list of parts was certainly over £450 (2nd hand engine with 45miles is £400) but as Nin says

It would still require a new cluch, oils etc. Some parts like the suction tube & intake manifold I could probaly buy 2nd hand and save a few £ but not a lot. I'm not sure how many extra tools I might need, but I do love the right tool for the right job ;)

Strip and re-coat casings - What would you use to strip the old paint and clean up?
Re-coat with?

If I rebuilt it would not be my ride, I'd probably still stick to my R1200RT-P or sell them both and get another GS again. (I miss my R1150GS).

I think I might carry on the learning experience :blast
 
Acid dip, vapour blast, two pack spray.

There’s nothing quite like the feeling of powering up a mountain side, miles from anywhere on a bike you built yourself …. And it misfires a couple of times.
 
Started stripping the heads, then later (hopefully this weekend) to remove some sheared exhaust studs. Exhaust stud removal tool couldn't even grip the stud, so will mig weld a nut on the top and hope.

did this go anywhere? just stripped and rebuilt an 1100 barrels and heads not far away
