We set off for our last chance for an outing before the xmas break with two venues in mind - a quick appointment in Windermere and an overnight in the Dales.
First stop poser's corner at Kirkby Longsdale. Another example of wherever you go with the bikes you always attract attention. We even had one old boy come over who was doing some weird Christmas family trip incorporating Glasgow and Norwich - our trip seemed tame in comparison.
The only person who didn't speak was some miserable tosser on another GSA who just got his buttie and sat on a wall reading his paper -
Next stop Windermere. Appointment over we stopped by the church for a quick look around Bowness.
Next route over Kirkstone Pass to stop at Pooley bridge at the top of Ullswater. A fantastic piece of road and well recommended
Then on across the M6 heading for Richmond to pick up our boots ordered from Altbergs. 60 miles on the A66 breezed by, but the tempremental fuel gauges kicked in and we limped into the services on the A1.
Picked up the boots after a good chat with the shop guy who happens to be a biker with a big restoration project underway, then on to Richmond for a hot butty - pork, stuffing, apple & gravy (northern boys love gravy)
Again more comments from passers by including a local lady with a GS650.
Headed off into the Dales for an overnight near Reeth. Found a barn for the bikes - almost biblical in a Christmas kind of way, but no wise men appeared with precious gifts
We sampled some very good refreshments served c/o Jennings brewery - Cock-a-Hoop and Cumberland - you have to be careful not to shorten the names when ordering in pint quantities
The following day was a complete change of weather, rain and strong winds. We headed up Swaledale and over into Hawes via Buttertubs Pass. This is a fantastic ride on a good day, but we were getting severly blown about with no visability, and the penalty for failure is a wire barrier followed by a decent drop.
We managed it down into Hawes and stopped at the Cafe to dicuss the hair raising run and had a chat with a KTM rider from Lancashire.
We had a quick pointless check of the map to look at alternative low route options and decided it couldn't be as bad again and set off through Gayle and up and over to Buckden
If anything this was worse. We stopped at the top and I felt the bike moving in the wind
We were 2 abreast when from nowhere a convertible Audi appeared behind. We moved over to let it past and continued downwards. At the bottom we stopped again to mutally congtatulate only to be again pipped from behind by the same convertible Audi - spooky
From there it was a steady ride back out of the Dales and home for lunch.
