I wasn’t planning to write this one up.

But I was asked very nicely by Tuftywhite. And he had just dropped his bike on the way over for me to have a look. (Thanks Tufty, nice to meet you).

Anyway, I wanted an air head adventure bike to do the TAT and maybe parts of the TET or Iceland or similar.

I was fortunate to get a good G/S donor bike - good as in not good enough to fully restore, but enough bits to form the base.

So after much research and several conversations with knowledgeable people (and some, not so) I’ve settled on a spec and starting the build.

Which of course means a trip to see Mike the magician.

I managed to stuff most of the bits in the car, bar the fuel tank.

But that’ll get swapped for an HPN job anyway.

The gearbox (kick start btw) is a thing of beauty, and has low first high fifth, all new bearings and wearing parts.

The block has a new crank and mains, Siebenrock 1000cc kit is coming as is a ceramic clutch and warmed up Cam.

Time to sell the second kidney. Or alternatively the 1250RT.

It’s the start of something big.

Thanks Nin. I love a good build thread.

Various parts are starting to roll in, I wanted to get all the European orders in before the end of the month for obvs. reasons. First to arrive, a nice parcel from Michel.

And an email from Herbert Gletter to say he’s making the fork yokes and fairing today.

I’m going for the KTM 640 lookie likee fairing - it works well with the Gletter yokes, has twin projector headlights and is a bit more contemporary than the HPN one. And plenty of room for the nav kit.

I like the look of that.

What material is the fairing made from?

I’ll let you know when I get it next week!

And a lucky buy from Facebook looks like a bargain.

Skimmed my rear drum something like 0.008".

Makes for a really smooth brake.

Build the wheel up first in order to allow for any stress in the casting caused by the pull of the spokes.

Write up somewhere on here.

This one doesn’t really need a skim. Less than 0.5mm lip, off to Mr Moore on Monday for building up.

Getting the bits together for the bottom end build coming up, managed to get a reasonable match on weight

What’s acceptable wear on rockers? There’s at least one here I’m a bit suspicious about.

Maybe time for some good used shimmed jobs.
